From 28.09.24 to 12.09.24 we were in Turkey (Antalya and Alanya) to interview German retirement migrants

«
“I was in Turkey from 28th of September to the 12th of October in the region of Alanya to interview German retirees who spend all or part of their retirement there. This region is characterized by many contrasts: On the one hand, the area is shaped by mountains, with cities such as Antalya and Alanya right at the foot. The cities are influenced by their history, old agriculture, modernity and tourism. The Germans who live there are as diverse as the cities in which they live. Many are united by the desire to spend their retirement in another - warmer - country. This is usually preceded by first vacations. But it's not just the climate and proximity to the sea that are important to people. For some, the low cost of living (especially in the past) or (past) relationships are also reasons for moving to Turkey.
People talk about the good acquaintances, the slower pace of life here, but also about the challenges. Above all, the regulations on residence permits (Ikamet) and access to the housing market for foreigners is a constant companion to the conversations.
The people I had the pleasure of interviewing tell a varied and moving life story that tells of the bravery of moving to another country, the risks involved and the importance of social networks, financial security and good health in shaping their lives.”
